The Dishwasher!
I remember a time when I was (much) younger, that doing the dish washing meant that I had to leave whatever it was that had my attention, and go and wash the dishes by hand!
My Dad was always there to ‘encourage’ me, and he did set a great example by helping me, and making sure that the whole kitchen sparkled when we’d finished!
Forward a few decades and I’m still doing it… attempts to get my offspring to do the job are usually met with howls of “it’s her turn”, or, “I did it last time” and “but Dad, I’ve got an assignment due tomorrow!”
That last one always makes me laugh, because I know that if I dig a little deeper, they’ve had the assignment for at least a week or two!
The amazing thing is that we do have a dishwasher, so the washing up is easy compared to doing it all by hand. I guess that’s the price we pay for progress!
We bought a new washing machine a few weeks ago, and while all the females of the house gathered around to read the fine print of the instruction booklet, I just did the guy thing and filled ‘er up and turned it on! Worked like a charm!
The only problem now is that I seem to land that chore all the time, the excuse being “…but you’re a natural at it, you don’t even need to read the instructions…”
Of course, life in PMT Palace does have advantages. I’m some times left to ponder exactly what they are, living as I am with a house full of females, but I’m sure that there are some!
I’m actually amazed in this day and age that so many people still differentiate between ‘men’s’ and ‘women’s’ work around the house. My Dad always did things like cooking, washing and ironing etc., so I guess that I just naturally followed on. If I hadn’t, I think that I would have had a lot more problems in my days as a bachelor…
