What If I Hold A Party And No One Comes

Coffee with Allan everyday

You know, that question faces me every time I sit down and write a blog post!

What if no one likes me and no one comes to my party?

Basically, it’s their loss. They may have other things on their mind, they might have an emergency. Or they might just plain forget.

It’s happened to most people to some degree, and it’s not nice when it does.

Writing an article and then seeing that numbers of people reading it are low doesn’t feel good either.

So whether it’s a birthday party, a business dream, or even a book, the risk is there that not many, or no one will turn up!

What do you do?

I recommend pulling a Nike and just doing it anyway.

Make sure that you have the right ‘venue’ for your party.

Make sure that the invitations are in place.

Make sure that you aren’t clashing with someone else’s party in the same neighborhood.

And then just do it.

If not many people turn up, tough, have a great time anyway.

Back in the day when I was young and stupid, my friends and I often tried to have parties, but most were relatively quiet affairs.

Then one night the cool crowd arrived. And the place was really buzzing. Then more guests arrived.

They were dressed in blue!

The next morning the clean up started. Halfway through, and no where near finished, someone’s parents arrived.

It was an experience that changed my attitude to parties.

But gee, it was fun πŸ™‚

In the case of my friend though, who is organizing a product launch, I don’t think there will be too many worries.

I’ve watched as for almost ten years as she has learned, and pulled the pieces together.

Finally she had the courage to put it in motion, and the pace accelerated.

Now is the time to do a Nike. If it bombs, or is only moderately successful, no worries.

The framework is there for the next party.

I’ve had a few parties since the one the cool crowd came to.

I learned that while it was a raging success, it was also a failure.

The wrong crowd came. And they never came back.

Have your party, enjoy yourself, and whether your problem is with a birthday party, a blog post or a business, not doing it because some people won’t turn up is silly.

After all, it is your party!

  1. I offered to do a mini-seminar on gardening, to be put on in the garden center I work in and open to the public. My one fear is that no one will show up, primarily because the store’s promotional efforts are nearly non-existent. I’ll get a few good friends to show up, maybe spread the word for me, then I’m just going to do it because I love gardening and I love teaching. Thanks for the quick shot of inspiration!

  2. You may just be surprised Shelley! Inviting a few friends is a good start, as they provide a structure to build on.
Spring is a great time to start something like that πŸ™‚

  3. Hello
I came across your article after hosting a birthday and having no one come. At first I was really hesitant but decided to “just do it” anyway. I had a restaurant booked, an outfit planned and everything was going smoothly but the day before my birthday everybody said “no” “can’t come” “busy” without even giving a reason why. At the end of the day I had 1 person out of 30+ people who could make it. I couldn’t face this, and go to my party to be all alone so I cancelled the reservations, returned my outfit, went home cried and had pizza.
And that’s the story on how no one bothered to come to my birthday

  4. I’m sorry to hear that. I’m sure that there was nothing personal intended, stuff happens.

It has happened to me, and relatively recently too.

My birthday was just at the start of school holidays that year, and everyone was running around getting their kids organized. Some were already out of town, and me?

I just had a beer, went home and put my feet up! Better luck (and timing?) next time.. πŸ™‚

I know that it feels terrible, but I hope that your next birthday is a blast!
