Grateful We Are Not Dead And Loving It

Getting to know people on Facebook can be fun, as well as handy for networking for business.

One of the people that I met during last year’s Thirty Day Challenge was Don White, from Canada!

Don is a part of “Grateful We’re Not Dead”, a music group that plays country music with a nice bluesy touch.

I’d sent Don some Youtube clips of Australian music, and was pleasantly surprised to find that he was acquainted with the music of people like Slim Dusty, and that we even listened to the same radio programs occasionally.

Talk about the power that Facebook has to bring people with similar interests together, from opposite ends of the planet!

Anyway, Don loaded some music onto the band’s website and sent me a message. Rather than keep this talent hidden, I thought that I would let all my friends hear it too!

The other members of the band are Gord Breedyk and Bruce Penniston.

Don made a point of telling me to turn my hearing aid down (cheeky blighter) as the sound wasn’t too professional!

He needn’t have worried, because it didn’t sound all that bad!

Then again, I may just have had a bit too much rock ‘n Roll in my younger days and be a little tone deaf, I’m not sure! 😉

Going off topic for a second, I’d have to say that apart from anything that I learned during the 30 Day Challenge, it has been a real privilege to meet people like Don during that time.

And of course, being Facebook friends makes it that much easier!

The PlayList

  • I Ain’t Never Gonna Do That Again (Don White)

  • Six Days on The Road (Dave Dudley)

  • The Farmer’s Daughter (Merle Haggard)
  • You Don’t Have To Call Me Darlin’ (Steve Goodman)

Al OwlerRight: Al Owler

A more recent addition to ‘Grateful We’re Not Dead’ is Al Owler.

Al started playing guitar just a few short years ago, and recently started playing bass for the group.

Apart from his instrumental prowess, Al is also a key part of the group in his organization abilities when it comes to setting up and packing away the equipment.

He’s great source of new material, and has added to the band’s repertoire.

These guys love having fun!

In fact, it’s one of the things that keeps them going!

While they don’t regard themselves as ‘professional’ in the strictest sense of the word, they play at a range of different functions, including conferences, parties and fund raising events.

As I mentioned, Don is one of my Facebook friends from the Great White North in Canada!

While I don’t catch up with him nearly as much as I would like to, I enjoy hearing about his escapades with Grateful We’re Not Dead!

You can get to know Don too, simply by clicking on his profile picture here!

You will be taken to Don’s public profile where you will be able to add him as a friend, provided that you are logged into Facebook of course!

  1. Hi Allan,

Glad to see you survived your visit to the GWND blog.

One thing I’d like to add is that we now have a new sideman that plays bass with us all the time: “young” Al Owler. Al is listed on the site as a “Friend of ‘Grateful We’re Not Dead'” and is young enough that he’ll likely be one of our pall bearers. Al started playing guitar about two years ago and Bruce got him started on bass about six weeks ago so I think he’s off to a great start.

Anyway, I didn’t want Al to go unrecognized for his contributions to GWND.

All the best from the Great White North,

    Don

  2. G’day Don,

Send me a picture of the young bloke and I will include him here as well – don’t know how I missed him… must’ve been looking forward to being ‘kidnapped’ again tonight!

    Cheers,

    Allan
