Please Stop Spamming My Facebook Wall

A number of people have shared with me that they love the concept of Facebook, and find the site easier to use than Myspace, but that they’re put off by vampires, werewolves, and so on!

I can handle the vampire bites! In fact, I’m probably so delicious that I can’t blame them… 😉 …actually, I just reject the invitations.

What bugs me is the thoughtless way some people post stuff on my wall, without checking whether it’s true or not!

Today, someone posted a story, or urban myth, about a brother and sister trapped in a fire in a Walmart Store!

I have pasted the whole thing below. My advice, if you are unfortunate enough to receive this, is to simply delete it!

Here is the post:

You Have To Read This:

A sister and her brother were inside a new Wal-Mart. The sister at eight years of age and the brother seventeen years of age.

The brother was wanting to buy a present for his little sister because her birthday was coming up.

As they were about to leave, she had to go to the bathroom. Her brother showed her where the restrooms were and he began looking at earrings he thought she might like for her birthday.

As he started to buy the earrings, he saw people running from the end of the store screaming and yelling with fear.

In the next moment he smelled smoke and saw flames. He ran to his little sister as fast as he could but when he got to the bathrooms the fire was already blazing.

He knew he had to to make sure help was coming. When the fire trucks arrived it was already too late. They assured the family that there were no survivors.

Two days later the family got a call from the hospital. They told them that they had someone there by the name of Sandy.

They asked, ‘How did you get this number?’ The hospital replied that the little girl had a purse clutched in her little hand with a card that gave her name and number on it. The family drove to the hospital to see their little angel.

While they thanked God for her survival, they noticed her arms were burnt so severely they were both amputated and her face was burned and she needed surgery.

The family didn’t have any health insurance and very little money to cover the bill. This family needs our HELP!

NOTE:Every time someone reposts this story, YAHOO will take $2.00 off the hospital bill.

DO NOT DELETE! MYSPACE IS TRACKING THIS! Please forward this ‘Sad Wal-Mart Story’. God knows who you are. Karma knows it could happen to you!

My Thoughts On The Story:

Stuff like this preys on the good nature of people, and as the good folks at Snopes.com say, everyone wants to help sick children get better.

Before passing stuff like this on though, people really need to think, and maybe do a little research.

There’s something else that you may want to consider before posting things on other peoples’ walls, or to their inbox: If enough people complain, you may lose your account!

I didn’t complain I might add, and have never done so, but I did contact the person concerned!

  1. I agree wholeheartedly… I don’t check my wall all that often and occasionally, I do see these “urban myths’ and other chain letters that come along and I think, why bother. The best one though is when people get excited about Bill Gates giving away money for passing along a test email!! Now that’s a good one 😉

  2. i don’t do facebook. the only profile page i run and update or check on a regular basis is my friendster account. but it isn’t different with facebook in terms of those stupid chain messages. even if it’s about God and religion, i still delete them. GOD DOES NOT FRIGHTEN ANYONE JUST SO TO BELIEVE IN HIM. I hate the way these people do this chain messages. they say at the bottom part to forward it or you’ll suffer, you’ll have bad luck, whatever. it isn’t good.

  3. G’day Ange!

I check my wall fairly often, and delete a lot of stuff! Apart from taking for ever to scroll down the page, there is some stuff that I just won’t allow there!

  4. Hi Zang,

A lot of stuff that people send like this is only to manipulate people, and they seem to add His name to make it more believable!

I like Facebook because a lot of people that I know are there!

I’ve joined Friendster, and linked it to my Facebook account, but I don’t get there very much!

    Thanks for the comment!

  5. G’day Jamie,

Yes – deleting is the best course of action!

If it is someone that I know, I will go to Snopes.com and look it up to see what they have to say about it. I then send the link saying thanks for the message, here’s more info…

    Thanks for the comment!

  6. Hi all,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention Allan, I haven’t had the chance to explore facebook yet as it’s been so busy round here, and what with my blog being down for more than 7hrs with no explanation am now exploring other hosting options.

I will be looking into facebook more over the coming days, as soon as I get the chance and I guess from your post i’ll be checking frequently my ‘wall’. I’ve seen these kinds of messages in my inbox a lot especially this time of year, seems they get everywhere.

  7. I can’t believe that people actually fall for this stuff. If such a thing happened in a Wal-Mart the company would be taking care of the family so that they do not lose a huge settlement in the courts. Maybe if the story had them in a small local store it would be a little more believable.
