Botany Bay Australia Day And Lamb Chops

Australia FlagAustralia was first settled in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip.

Following the loss of the American colonies, Britain needed to find somewhere to send its overcrowded prison population.

On the recommendation of Sir Joseph Banks, who had traveled to Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770, it was decided to create a convict settlement at Botany Bay.

In 1787, a fleet of eleven ships, known as the First Fleet, left England under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip to settle the new land.

Finding Botany Bay unsuitable for settlement, it was decided to settle in nearby Sydney Cove.

The fleet landed there on January 26, 1788.

The fleet carried 1305 people, including 736 convicts, 211 marines and wives, children of convicts and marines, as well as officers.

Today, January 26 is a National Holiday, marking the birth of a nation!

Highlighting the competition between the English and French at the time, Admiral Jean-François de La Pérouse arrived in Botany Bay shortly after the first fleet on January 26, 1788!

The French also mapped part of Australia, and in 1792 landed in Southern Tasmania, naming the harbour of Recherche Bay

  1. Hello Allan, I’m glad you’re interested in US politics and their political process. Anything that happens in that country affects the rest of the world.

I too am keenly observing and documenting events in the current primaries; and I have viewed the candidates’ positions on issues and concerns that affect my country and the world at large.

Currently, America is involved in 3 wars, is rattling off against North Korea and Iran, is in recession but won’t admit it, and its image is in disrepute in most parts of the globe. The incoming President, whoever he or she might be, will be facing enormous challenges, including internal disagreements within their own country.

Tough for them, and I’m certainly glad to be living where I am. I know you are too.

P.S. Good history lesson you posted on the settlers in Australia that founded a country. I wonder if they ever imagined it would be this influential 200 plus years later. –Durano, done!

  2. G’day Durano,

The economic problems are also reflected to varying degrees in Britain, Australia and other ‘Anglo Saxon’ countries.

Buying on credit is always a risk, especially if productivity isn’t keeping pace with interest.

One problem facing most western countries is the fact that many of their industries are moving offshore, and therefore imports are increasing.

Unless productivity increases, along with exports, the budget runs into deficit…

    Glad you liked the post!

    Cheers!
