Paying It Forward On Facebook…!
Facebook continues to amaze me with the variety of groups, and people on the site.
One of the most interesting that I’ve come across, and joined, has to be Pay It Forward For Entrepreneurs .
This group, started by copywriter and Entrepreneur Trevor ‘Toecracker’ Crook, has the stated intention of making life easier for new entrepreneurs.
In Trevor’s words, the aim of the group is to “…Help One Million Entrepreneurs Get More Success For FREE By Giving YOU Access To Proven Success Tools which includes; Copy writing, Internet Marketing, Direct Mail and Business Strategies…”
This is an interesting concept, and while there will undoubtedly be rewards for Trevor and his team, both directly and indirectly, it shows the power of the concept of ‘Paying it Forward’ and its popularity.
The concept of paying it forward is an age old one, being reflected in the gospel principle of loving your neighbor as your self, and doing good with no expectation of reward. While there are differences of course, the principle is what counts, and I think that if more people took this attitude, the world would surely be a nicer place!
It also demonstrates the power of Facebook to bring people together from all corners of the world to form groups with a focus that varies from supporting politicians, to others plotting their downfall, groups of football fans, music fans, college students, old people, young people and everyone else in between.
The Facebook group Support the Monks’ Protest In Burma now has over 430,000 members, drawn from all over the globe. With October 24, 2007 being the 12th anniversary of the imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected ruler who was imprisoned by the ruling junta, this group is helping to coordinate world wide protests.
One has to wonder whether even the founders of Facebook could foresee the tremendous impact that the site would have, especially in the social and political arenas, when they first started out?
With Web 2.0 social media powering communication and interactivity, we are seeing a level of communication among normal citizens world wide who would never have otherwise met.
This phenomenon is global, cuts across all races and creeds, and is egalitarian in nature. A personal example of this is that even my kids and their friends think that it’s ok to be friends with me on Facebook, something which I doubt would be the case on sites such as Bebo or Myspace!
One has to wonder where this will lead, as we head further into the 21st century, and as technology advances even further.
