Plain English Guide To Social Networking!
As soon as social networking is mentioned, networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Linkedin and so on immediately come to mind.
There are others springing up all the time. One that I am playing with at the moment is Docstoc.com.
Is social networking a new phenomenon? Well, no, as I have said before, it has been around for years, it’s just that now it is online!
The video below, from Commoncraft, gives a very simple, and very brief explanation of social networking.
Privacy On Social Networking Sites
The main thing to remember with any social networking site, is that protection of your privacy, is basically your concern.
In other words, don’t share information that you don’t want others to know, and use the privacy features offered by the website that you are joining.
For instance, Facebook allows you to use a ‘limited profile’, so that certain people that you select can only see part of your profile.
Even with a limited profile though, if there is any chance that others will see information that you don’t want them to, don’t include it!
Your Profile Is Public Property!
This is a point that I often make to people, and have written about it before on this post.
Although I titled the post ‘How Facebook Is Killing Careers…’, the fact is that the guy mentioned did it himself! And others are doing it as well!
What you post, and allow others to post, on your Facebook profile is in the public domain!
If you wouldn’t want your Mum, or your kids to see it, don’t allow it on there!
When I get a notification that someone has posted on my wall, I check it as soon as I can - and if it is inappropriate, I delete it as soon as I see it!
Making Friends On Facebook
Making friends on Facebook, Linkedin, Myspace other sites is a great way of building your network.
My network includes people from a number of countries and backgrounds.
I enjoy networking, and while many have described it as being democratic, I’d add egalitarian to the description as well.
Because of the nature of my network, and the background of my friends, I try and take care that they don’t get offended by me.
That’s why I keep such a sharp eye on my profile, because apart from my self respect, I also respect my friends!
Feel free to add me to your network! To add me as a friend on Facebook, simply click on the Facebook profile picture above.
You will find me as Ozegold on Myspace, Linkedin and Docstoc!
