One of the things that I have noticed about Facebook since I’ve been a member is that they don’t take too kindly to aggressively adding friends.
I have seen and heard of a number of people losing, or having their accounts suspended over this issue. The problem is that there isn’t anything clearly stated in the terms of service to alert members to it.
A related issue is the number of ‘pending’ friend requests that you have.
Apparently, having too many of these can result in the same actions being taken, a fact that has been pointed out to me by a couple of friends who had it happen to them.
I have seen people invite others to add them as friends by posting in groups, and have done so, only to find weeks later that they still haven’t responded to a friend request.
It does make one wonder why they bother issuing the invitation to start with.
I don’t add people as friends anymore that post an open invitation in groups because of this.
Facebook Makes The Rules…
I have no problem with Facebook making the rules, after all, it is their site, but, wouldn’t it be reasonable to expect that there would be guidelines clearly stating these rules?
Two articles that I have read recently relating to these issues are this one by Harry Joiner and this one by Thor Muller. Both articles are well worth reading, as are most of the comments and responses.
I don’t intend to editorialize here, but I do make this post as a gentle warning to some who may wish to grow a network quickly.
Aggressively adding friends on Facebook is not the way to do it.
The other side of the coin is of course, that some clear guidelines and consistency would be appreciated.
Facebook is a fantastic site, and I have made a number of great friends there.
There are a number of contradictions though, from limits on the number of friends you can have, and the number of messages you can send, to applications that assist in adding large numbers of friends, and a system that facilitates easy communication!
One place that I don’t have a problem in adding friends on Facebook is here!
