Facebook is a great place to network, and to get to know others.
A number of tools such as Twitter, Blog Friends and Stumbleupon are provided, helping others to get to know you, while letting you get to know them as well!
Many people seem to misuse this opportunity though, and simply use the wall and/or discussion groups to post a sales message. They then move on to the next group, where they repeat the process. I don’t know if they achieve any results doing this, but I know that it isn’t networking!
To me, networking is a matter of relationship, regardless of how the network is made up. Networks can be family, friends, and work or business associates. Whether the people involved are online or offline, the principle is the same.
People who post their messages like this seem to care if the topic that they are posting on is relevant to the group, or to the other topics being discussed there.
Unfortunately, apart from the possibility of having their post deleted by admin, they also run the risk of losing their Facebook account, which in turn makes the whole exercise even more of a waste of time and effort.
We’re all bombarded by sales messages everyday, crammed in boxes, sms messages on phones, newspaper, radio and television advertisements, and the list goes on.
Because of this, most people simply tune out when it comes to advertising, and get get annoyed when it crops up in places where they don’t expect it!
When I see a post for some one’s offer on a wall or in a discussion group, I totally ignore it. Lobbing a post on the wall like that, to my mind, shows a total disregard for others, and a preoccupation with self – selfishness.
It shows no marketing skill, and I’d place it on the same level as emails for viagra and other trash that I receive by the hundreds daily!
Groups on Facebook do have rewards for members who join and post according to the rules. As I said before, this puts you there in front of people, and allows them to get to know you.
Post responsibly, and intelligently, and others are more than likely to want to check out your profile, and catch your tweet or blog as it appears on friends’ pages.
