Prince Harry Hunted By The Taliban In Afghanistan
Newsweek has reported that Afghan militants claim they knew Prince Harry was in Afghanistan.
The British government had made an effort to keep the Prince’s whereabouts secret by placing a news embargo on the prince.
Despite this, the news was leaked last week by Matt Drudge, of the Drudge Report.
Prince Harry’s tour of duty in the country was cut short after his presence there was revealed by Drudge.
Taliban leaders claim to have known that the prince was in the country, and that they were seeking to kidnap and execute him.
According to Newsweek, British and US intelligence officials are skeptical of the claim, dismissing it as wishful thinking and propaganda.
Is the press an arm of government?
The British government had been successful in arranging a news embargo on the prince while he was in Afghanistan.
Apparently the news was accidentally leaked by New Idea magazine in Australia, and picked up by Drudge.
Regardless of where one stands on the issue of freedom of the press, and its relationship to government authority, in this circumstances a number of lives have been put at risk by Drudge’s actions.
Had the Taliban succeeded in locating him, not only the Prince, but his fellow soldiers could have been killed.
Only time will tell whether the present course of action in Iraq and Afghanistan is the right one.
This disclosure does nothing to help the situation, and apart from putting lives at risk, would only have served to make the situation even worse.
Harry was doing his duty as a soldier, along with his comrades, nothing more or less.
Politicians declare wars, soldiers are sent to fight them. People like Drudge and New Idea only make the job harder.
The prince has since flown home, now, if only it was that easy for the rest of the troops there…
