Residents Plead For A Name Change Because Nobody Likes A Bogan
Residents of Bogan Place in Wahroonga, in Sydneys northern suburbs have given weight to the fact that no one likes a “Bogan”.
Residents of the street are begging the local council to change the name because of the stigma associated with Boganism.
Just what is a ‘Bogan’, and why don’t people like them?
One definition that I heard recently was that a Bogan was an Australian with a distrust of authority who loves sport, and drinking beer!
The trouble is, that that definition could match about 96% of us!
There is a Bogan River, and a Bogan Shire, both in the NSW outback.
The Bogan River is best known for not running much during dry season (read: most of the time) and then every few years flooding vast areas of land for weeks at a time!
I guess that that’s pretty much a Bogan sort of act anyway…
Bush poet Banjo Patterson referred to a ‘Bogan Shower’ in his poem, “City of Dreadful Thirst” in 1902. The shower consisted of three drops of water and some dust, but referred more to the dry nature of the area than anything else.
A bogan is generally accepted as someone who is uncultured, uncouth and who dresses in a certain manner.
He/she will usually dress in a flannelnet shirt, stubbie shorts and a blue shearer’s singlet.
Mostly of working class origins, the Bogan’s car of choice is a Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon.
A recent development has been the emergence of the Cashed Up Bogan, or CUB.
A CUB can earn over $100,000.00 a year without risking their ‘Boganess’.

The music favored by Bogans is said to be Cold Chisel (anything Barnsey), or ACDC (Acker Dacker).
The favored beverage is beer, mostly VB or Victoria Bitter, delivered in ‘slabs’ (pack of 24).
