This Alaskan Train Stops Anywhere You Want

It’s been a long time since I wrote anything to do with social media, so this morning I decided to write about something that I FOUND on social media. A train that stops anywhere you want along the way.

The train is operated by Alaska Railroad, and it travels to Hurricane Gulch.

The Hurricane operates on a “flag stop” system, as there are no actual stations along the route. Intending passengers need to flag the train down when they want it to stop. I’m guessing that the spot where they’re flagging the train would need to be in good view of the driver i.e. on a straight stretch of line with good visibility. Due to stopping distances required by the train, a walk may be required to get to it.

Disembarking simply requires alerting the conductor.

People in this area live “off the grid”, and the train provides a vital service for residents, providing mail and freight services. More details on the operation of the train can be found at Alaska Railroad

An interesting stop featured on the video that I watched is “Sherman City Hall”, home of author, and homesteader, Mary Lovell. You can find more about Sherman Hall on here on their Facebook page

This video was a nice find and I enjoyed it along with my morning coffee. The YouTube channel is owned by Noel Phillips, and features a lot of places that I’d love to add to my bucket list of places to travel. He just added another one!
