My Very Own Bucket List

Teeg's IconTeeg has tagged me with The Bucket List!

A bucket list is a list of things that I’d like to do before I die.

When I first received the challenge, I thought of all the far away places that I’d love to see, and the people that I’d love to meet if I had 12 months to live.

The more I thought about it though, the more the travel and adventure side of it paled in comparison to the chance to sit and talk, and party, with my family and friends.

I’m realizing more now that this is what my dad did before passing away – spent time with his loved ones where he could before he went. But hey, he wasn’t morbid, and neither do I intend to be.

The first thing I’d do is take my wife and family on a tour to where my parents were born, and retrace the steps that my ancestors from Britain and France took to come to Australia.

I’d make a point of trying all the exotic foods that I have only heard about, and cruise the canals of France before spending time in Italy and Greece.

On the way over I’d tour the Middle East, and explain the significance that the events of thousands of years past have for us today.

The Orient ExpressNext on the list would have to be treating my wife to a trip across Europe on the Orient Express.

For a touch of adventure, and totally out of character for me I guess, I’d like to send everyone ahead and travel through Siberia, and into the Arctic circle.

Alaska and Canada have always intrigued me, so they’d be a must for me to visit. (Must be because they are so cold and Australia is so warm?)

Then onto the US and especially to North Carolina where I’d catch up with Teeg and Ken.

Of course, there are tons of things i’d like to do like travel through South America to the Antarctic to see if penguins really sing (I know, but it would be nice to check anyway, OK?).

Asia has always fascinated me too, and trekking across New Guinea on the Kokoda Trail….

How much time have I got did you say?

The reality is though, that it is the people that I care about most, so spending that time is the most important.

I include my online friends from Facebook and my blog as well, so if I arrive on your doorstep one day…

The next question is, do we have to wait until we’re ready to die to do that?

The Bucket List PosterAbout The Bucket List

The Bucket List is a 2008 film starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, along with Sean Hayes, Beverly Todd, and Rob Morrow.

Directed by Rob Reiner, the story is about two men, a blue collar worker, and a billionaire magnate, both suffering from cancer, who travel the world with a list of things to see and do before they ‘kick the bucket’ (hence the name ‘Bucket List’).

As a result of the trip, the two men are forced to confront themselves, and their relationships.

I’d recommend the film, and won’t write much more about it in case I spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it yet.

  1. Hi Allan,

This is difficult to think about. There are tons of things I need to do currently and thinking of those I’d want to do before I hit the bucket is additional load.

Basically it will all fall around those that we love and care for. But even that can be plenty. I care for a lot of people and things that need to be accomplished. Not all the people I care for are relatives even.

But if it’s for myself, it would be travel, sights of historical significance, and doing something daring like I used to when I was younger. I can think of a few but would rather not mention it here. 🙂 Wonderful post!–Durano, done!

  2. G’day Durano,

    Consider yourself tagged!

There’s a a lot of things that I’d like to do that I did when I was younger, but…

Now to head off and find out just what women want on your blog!

    Cheers

  3. Hi Allen,

I love your list! I wonder if travel is so important on these lists because it gives us something big to think about while our brains are trying to process what’s going on with us? I suspect part of it also is that traveling is one of those things that is sooooo easy to put off…when we have more free time, money, children are older, etc.

One thing I noticed after I’d written my list is that some of my life goals, especially things I’d like to learn, such as learning to fly a plane or ride a horse, didn’t make it on the list at all. In fact, I didn’t even think of them until I’d already posted it. Curious if you happened to notice anything similar. 🙂

And now that you’ve made your list, I’ll echo mousewords blessing to me (she’s the one who tagged me): I wish you long life, health, wealth, and happiness so that you can go out and follow your dreams. 🙂

PS Just learned something, if you forget to fill in the top info before trying to post your reply, it erases your reply. 🙁

  4. Hey Teeg,

Thanks for tagging me – was cause for reflection.

When it comes down to it, travel would be nice, though I find that as I get older, the people really do mean more to me.

I have met so many people from so many different cultures and backgrounds over recent years, that any travel that I undertook would be to see where they came from, and share the world that they live in.

Thanks for the blessings, and may they come back to you tenfold!
