Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto Assassinated

Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan, and the Muslim world’s first woman prime minister, has been assassinated.

Born June 21, 1953, Bhutto followed her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, into politics.

He was executed in 1979 following a controversial trial for authorizing the murder of a political opponent.

The move was largely seen as being politically motivated under the directives of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

Benazir Bhutto served as prime Minister twice, from 1988 to 1990, and from 1993 to 1996. Educated at Harvard University (B.A., 1973), she then studied philosophy, political science and economics at Oxford University (B.A., 1977).

At the time of her death, Bhutto was leaving an election rally for the upcoming January 8 elections.

She was apparently shot, and her attacker then blew himself up, killing at least twenty other people.

The election is now in doubt because of Bhutto’s death, and there is fear that civil war could erupt due to the violence that has spread across the country.
