Is It Just Me Or Has Social Media Changed?

I don’t know about you, but I feel that social media has changed over the years, and not necessarily for the better!

I’ve had a bit of a see sawing relationship with social media for a while. I keep getting drawn back to sites like Twitter and Facebook because of the people that I know there, but I get distracted by the noise. And I find that there is a lot less two way communication, especially on Twitter.

I originally joined these sites to get to know people – i.e. build online friendships.

As far as the term social media is concerned, I’m afraid that it has become less social, and more media!

Nowadays it seems to be just a matter of getting your message out there, and blow what anybody else thinks!

I took a stand today, and stopped following a lot of people who are doing this.

And a number of others who have a huge list of followers, and are following a handful of others.

While it may make them look special to some, it doesn’t really mean anything, does it?

I mean, what’s the use if no one is listening to what you are saying?

If the idea of being on social sites is to “connect with your audience”, surely you need to be sure that they are listening?

AllanAnd how do you do that?

By engaging with them, and arr, treating them as actual people, rather than electronic identities “out there somewhere”.

Also, if you’re worried about the “noise” on these sites, you could try stop making so much noise yourself!

Then people may be able to hear you!

At least with sites such as Google Plus and Facebook, there is a way of getting to know people.

Anyway, trimming back the number of people that I was following means that I have more space to add some new mates!

So if you’d like to see what I am up to on Twitter, you can find me here.

And on Facebook, I’m here!

While on Google Plus I’m here!

You can be sure that I will at least try and engage in conversation. /rant
