What I Really Hate About Myspace!

Myspace, Bebo and Facebook, and many similar sites, are revolutionary, in that they’re changing the way that we see the world.

It’s fantastic that we can communicate with others from around the world!

Most of us can only wonder at what is over the horizon with web technology in the near future.

While the title might lead people to think that I’m having a rant about privacy issues and other concerns with social media sites, and those concerns are merited, this post is about some members of these sites.

Today I have met up with two people wishing to be my friend on Myspace.

One was a rather voluptuous, sweet looking young thing who’s greeting started with ‘Hello Handsome…’.

My first reaction, was that she’s blind, the second, she must think I’m stupid.

I turned that friend request down in seconds flat!

The second person who requested that I be his friend looked like a frog, and was using a pseudonym.

I can understand how some people may feel that nature has dealt them a cruel blow by giving them an extra hard whack with the ugly stick, but the false name really got to me!

Using such an obviously false name put me at a disadvantage, because he’d know all about me, but I wouldn’t know him.

Bear in mind that I am the man with two names, and you can find out why by reading the ‘about me’ pages.

Identity issues can bring a cloud over the whole social networking scene.

Internet privacy is a big issue, and doesn’t just apply to giving information to websites, but to individuals you meet online as well!

The two questions that have to be asked are:

How much information are you willing to hand over, and are the people that you befriend really who they say they are?

People give so much information to social networking sites that it’s scary.

But it’s just as scary when you’re being open, and others can get your information, without you knowing who they are.

What do you think?

Footnote: To all my wonderful friends who use avatars or pictures, this is not about you, but about people who don’t want others to know who they are.

There is a difference!
