Protecting Your Identity Who Are You Anyway?

Allan Cockerill's Facebook profileWith all the talk of identity theft online, and by various means offline as well, I began to wonder just how do we define ourselves anyway?

Protecting ourselves online is a matter of being careful of where and when we disclose our details, and who to, as well as maintaining good firewall, antivirus and antispyware protection on our computer systems.

Finding out who we are and how we define ourselves is another matter.

People often define themselves by their occupation or station in life – I’m a businessman, or I’m just a house wife, and I’m a computer technician, or…

When things hit the fan, as they often do in life, to all sorts of people, the good, the bad and the indifferent – people who define their identity in this way can be the hardest hit.

The same goes for those who define their identity by the amount of money or possessions that they have, or even who their partner is!

Some may also define themselves by their religion and nationality.

Human beings are wonderfully complex creatures, who I believe exist on more than one level, and by that I mean spirit, soul, and body.

If I were to define myself by my occupation I would be in trouble, simply because I have done so many things over the years.

The common thread has been my writing, but along the way have operated my own business, worked as a health professional and even driven buses…

Everything that I’ve done has involved people, lots of people.

This has been a great help with my writing as far as a source of inspiration is concerned.

I could add the fact that I have a great partner to whom I’ve been married for 21 years, great kids, had parents who gave their best, and great friends too.

I live in comparative luxury in a democratic country – Australia – but is that who I am…?

And who are you? How do you define and identify yourself?
