Getting Your Message Out With Viral Marketing

by Allan Cockerill on January 27, 2008

Viral marketing is a term that refers to marketing techniques that use social networks to produce an increase in brand awareness.

It’s estimated that a satisfied customer tells an average of at least three people about a product or service that they like.

It’s also estimated that the same person will tell an average of eleven people about a product or service that they don’t like!

Viral advertising can be delivered by word of mouth.

More recently though, the power of the internet has been used to great effect to enhance the delivery of viral advertising.

The number of funny, witty and imaginative advertisements on You Tube is evidence of this.

Take for example this Spicy Chicken advertisement for Burger King!

Kung Fu chooks, and Spicy Chicken Crisps are a different product to a Mercedes-Benz E-Klasse, but the principle is the same.

Creating a slightly ridiculous situation and only mentioning the product once, the next advertisement is great for a laugh, but the product sticks in the memory long after the advertisement has finished.

Of course, if an ad is good enough, viewers may watch it several times before forwarding it on.

Over the next few days I will be talking about creating viral products to use to create a market awareness.

I will also reviewing a couple of them – I hope you can join me!.
