What Can I Do About Burma?

Although some members of the ASEAN bloc have condemned events in Burma in recent days, the UN is considering sanctions, and the US is introducing travel restrictions, ordinary people the world over have the power to help change this situation.

Burma’s main ally, and supporter is China. Pressure China, and you pressure Burma.

Here are some simple steps that you can take: Contact retailers and importers of Chinese goods and tell them that you are organizing a boycott of their products until human rights abuses in both Burma and China cease.

It doesn’t matter how cheap the products are – if they are tainted by the blood of the innocent, they are not cheap at all! Don’t be supporter of these regimes for the sake of saving a few dollars.

Contact the TV networks that have contracted to show the Beijing Olympics, telling them that you are organizing a boycott of their programming from NOW, not just during the Olympics, until the situation changes.

Email the embassies of both nations, pleading with them to stop the slaughter.

The Beijing Olympics are China’s showpiece, and their prestige is tied into the success or otherwise of the games. Apply pressure now, and apply it consistently.

Contact your local member of Parliament, Congress etc., and lobby for your nation to boycott the Olympics. There is an election in Australia this year, a presidential election next year in the US. If enough people raise their voices and clamour for change, they have to listen….
