Are You Boring Your Twitter Followers Spitless

Allan Cockerill‘A great site to add followers…’

Or so went the tweet! As did the next tweet from that person, and the next, and the next…!

The solution was plain, and simple! A quick click to his profile, and another to ‘unfollow’ him!

This is why boring your followers with a constant stream of links and promos will get you nowhere!.

Thay haven’t joined your marketing list!

They have joined a social networking site.

Many have joined to socialize with friends, others to get updates on news, while others still have joined just to find out what the fuss is all about.

Oh, and quite a few have joined up to promote their business offer.

This means that they will most probably want to network right back at you.

I don’t have a problem with this, but if you are always talking about you, then you will have missed the point of social media!

Don’t get lost on a road to nowhere!

A Road To No Where

An email marketing list is usually double optin, and even then there is no guarantee that your subscribers will read your content.

This is especially so if you use poor head lines, send emails too often, and/or don’t add value.

Imagine the futility then of spending all your time and energy building a following on social media sites and then blow it all by having users block you!

Worth thinking about…

Follow Friday Is Good! Is It Time For Unfollow Monday?

Teeg and I were having a joke about Follow Friday the other day.

Maybe what is needed now is an “Unfollow Monday” to get rid of spammers.

Instead of using #ff we could use #um!

Then instead of people sending around lists of people that they recommend…

The possibilities are endless!

Have a great weekend!

  1. Hi Allan,

This is so true. I always browse through prospective follower profile tweets and level of interaction/engaging with others before deciding to follow or not.

Even then, there have been some I chose to follow who later start tweeting those pesky “Get 400 Followers a Day” nonsense or Magpie crap, and it becomes overwhelming in the Twitter stream.

I’m all for twittering for business and clients etc, but far too often the tendency becomes less and less social networking and engaging with followers.

Speaking personally, I’m MUCH more likely to RT or help follower business tweets/links with a Stumble or Digg, as a way of helping them with their biz, when they have spent time interacting with me on a personal level.

Far too many Twitter users just don’t get it.

  2. @tiddlywinks Social media provides a great way of creating a buzz and building a profile, but constantly marketing will only drive people away.

The value of sites like Twitter and other sites is that even with a few hundred direct followers, you have a reach into their networks that could potentially number in the hundreds of thousands, or even millions of people.

The “add hundreds of thousands of follower sites” that are springing are doing a disservice to the people who use them in the long run, but they can’t see that!

    Enjoy your weekend 🙂

  3. Hello Allan (and friends),

So glad to have found this site and so happy its a local.

Obviously I adore the ‘Coffee with’ title and I loved your explorekatoomba site.

Great models to live up to! Being utterly new and innocent in these worlds of twittering & blogging until a months ago, I totally agreed and nodded my head off as I went through your post.

It seems that Friday is now all about #ff. I did a few then I found I spent most of the day deleting the rt. The ones I did follow, I would do the #um – amazed at the traffic 1 person can generate.

Surely some of their thumbs must have fallen off by now.

Like Lin I now spend time reviewing the bio, blogs and some time reading posts before following.

  4. Hi @julie_wise, It’s refreshing to meet someone on Twitter that takes the time to check someone’s blog, AND their profile!

Thanks for your kind comments, and I look forward to keeping up with you both on Twitter and Coffee With Zooly (Your post on women in history is very telling – and as a Dad of four daughters, still as relevant today as ever!)

    Have a great week!

  5. Allan, I have to agree with you entirely. Occasionally I feel that I post a few too many tweets regarding my photography-for-sale, but I always ensure I talk about life, interests, plus talk with other twitterers.

Yet I also block users who ONLY post advertising, marketing and repetitive posts. Thanks for reminding me what the ‘Soc’ in ‘SocNet’ really is all about.

  6. @eztephen Talking with other Twitter users is what it’s all about, and no one really cares about the occasional link if there is real interaction going on!

I agree that when people do nothing but share links it all wears a bit thin.

    Have a great week mate!

    Allan

  7. via @tiddlytwinks One thing about Twitter that continues to perplex me is the recommendation of many to keep the numbers of those we’re following as close as possible to those who are following us.

I don’t know where new followers have been coming from lately, but I can’t help but think some of them are coming from those get 400 + followers a day lists, based on who I see is following these peeps back. Booo hisss.

Some new followers are legit Twitter users but I’m not interested in their main topic focus or reason for being on Twitter. Sometimes I find the business they’re promoting doesn’t interest me in the least, while others are non-stop one-way tweets with very little @ interaction with followers, except maybe through DM.

In your opinion, should I be at all concerned about equaling out the following/followee numbers as much as possible even if I’m not interested? Should I consider blocking some of them, even though they’re legit users, in order to keep my Twitter ratio balanced? Some of the newer followers have thousands upon thousands of followers – something I couldn’t care less about. I just want people who will actually engage with me, help promote my posts with RT’s etc, just like everyone else wants done for them.

Signed, perplexed and somewhat frustrated. 😉

  8. Dear Perplexed & Somewhat Frustrated (aka @tiddlytwinks) I can really understand your situation! I personally don’t worry about any follower/followee balance – if I want to follow someone back I will, if not, I won’t, it’s that simple!

As a matter of fact, even though numbers on both lists on my profile sort of balance at times, a lot of the people that I follow don’t follow me, and I don’t follow all of those who follow me!

I follow people if I think that they have something interesting to say. If they follow me in turn, that’s nice, if they don’t, that’s fine too!

I use Topify to check people who follow me – if they interact, and don’t look as though they are spammers, I add them!

So, in a rambling, disjointed sort of an answer, I guess that I am saying who cares about the ratio? Follow people who you like, and can relate to!

    Have a great week! 🙂
