You Can’t Please Everyone, So

You Can’t Please Everyone, So You’ve Got To Please Yourself!

Coffee.. with AllanThe above line comes from a song by Rick Nelson, “Garden Party”, which is a 1972 hit song written by Rick Nelson.

It was recorded by Rick and the Stone Canyon Band on the album Garden Party.

The song tells the story of the time Nelson was booed off the stage at Madison Square Garden because he had changed his image from the clean cut teen idol of the 1960s to one of long hair and country singer during the 1970s.

You can find more about the song here.

Are You A People Pleaser?

Sometimes we can get so busy doing whatever it is that we do to create an income, being at the beck and call of friends and relos (Aussie slang for relatives – we shorten everything!) or just doing “stuff” that we forget to take time out for ourselves.

I was talking to a new guy at work yesterday, and he asked my why I had cut back on the hours that I work. The reason is simple – I don’t want to wear myself out, and I want to do the stuff that I enjoy. Typical Baby Boomer, huh?

I’m not talking about not working – we all need to work.

If I was to be unemployed for some reason, I’d volunteer my time to help others to avoid vegetating.

At the moment I work on an “outside” job for just a few hours a day. I still write, and create videos, and sometimes help with websites (which is one reason that this site has often been a mess – because I’ve tended to get too busy at times).

Maintaining balanceIt’s all about maintaining balance!

We all need to get aside and do the things that we enjoy, that make us who we are, otherwise, we can get lost in a sea of busyness, and lose contact with those who are important to us. We can even lose track of who we are.

I enjoy writing. In fact, if I don’t enjoy the writing, whether here on my blog, or a paid assignment, I have a lot of difficulty in producing. This blog is actually therapy for me. I get to try new stuff and see if it works.

The video below is an example of that. Last year, She Who Must Be Obeyed and I went to Greenwell Point on the NSW South Coast near Nowra for a long weekend.

It rained most of the time we were there, and the locals were all apologetic for some reason (it rains, full stop.). We had a great time anyway – excellent accommodation, walks on the beach, and no shopping. (That’s important sometimes – believe me).

We came across fishermen cleaning fish on the beach on Saturday, and I videoed the task for a few minutes, focusing on the pelicans.

After a couple of busy days this week, I pulled the video out and played with backgrounds from Dropmock.

The result is below, a 49 second video about a bunch of pelicans that proves nothing, sells nothing, but which shows me that I have learned something new. What did I learn?

How to convert the video MP4 to HTML5 format (WEBm and OGV), how to insert an image at the beginning and end of the video, and how to create the video itself by putting it in the image.

It’s all simple if you know how!

I realize that there are professionals out there for who this would be simple, or old hat, but the fact is that I gained a sense of achievement while relaxing away from my usual tasks.

And it brings us back to doing things occasionally that please ourselves. Being that little bit creative, independent, and away from the usual noise of everyday life for a while.

That’s what I am doing with this post.

I’ve turned all the social media off, everyone’s out of the house, and I am here writing, just for the fun of it.

Pleasing myself!

Have a great day, and make sure to smell the coffee!

  1. Hmmm… there must be a song in that. Oh right, there already is. 🙂

I have to agree with you Allan. Once you’re happy with what you’re doing, then you’ll be in a state of mind to make other people happy… maybe.

  2. G’day Don! I think that often, other people will be unhappy regardless of what we do, so it makes sense to please ourselves instead of running around trying to please everyone else!

I went to bed with Rick Nelson’s song on my mind, and woke up to find it was still there!

Made sense to write about it!
