5 Quick Ways Not To Get Me To Follow You On Twitter or Plurk

And 5 more ways to get me to stop following you if I do!

Twitter IconOK, Here’s the first list:

  • Don’t include a real photo on your profile.
  • Don’t include your real name on your profile!
  • Show that you following thousands of others, but have made only three updates, or worse still, none at all!
  • Have updates on your profile that do nothing but promote your product!
  • 5 Make 10 updates or more about the same thing in a matter of minutes!

5 Quick Ways To get Me To Stop Following You

(If I was silly enough to do so in the first place!)

  • DM me and thank me for the follow, while stating that you are there to help me earn $50,000.00 an hour using some magic formula!
  • Do nothing but broadcast your sales message every time you Tweet.
  • Don’t interact with those around you!
  • Use foul language and sexual innuendo in your Tweets.
  • Share links to porn when you Tweet!

Friendfeed badge

A key thing to remember when it comes to social media, and networking on Twitter, Plurk, FriendFeed or any other site, is this:

If I joined your “list”, then by default, you joined mine as well!

If you don’t want to listen to what I have to say back to you, then just say adios amigos and I will unfollow you too!

Who Do I Follow?

People who have something interesting to say, whether it be about politics, conservation, the news, business, history or what ever!

I don’t care if you have 10 followers, or 10,000, I will base my decision on whether to follow on what I see on your profile.

You see, I’m there to interact, and learn, and share!

I will check your offer, and if I like it, I will tell my other friends on all the other networks I’m on!

But spam me, and it’s all a wasted effort!

I don’t use auto follow programs, and rarely send a direct message unless I am having a conversation with someone!

Disclaimer: I played with SocialToo, but conscience got the better of me!

Having said all of that, please feel free to meet me on any of these sites! I don’t really bite… well, not that much!

…And remember to play nice, and follow the Twitter Golden Rule:

Tweet others the same way you would like to be tweeted!

  1. Allan, great post and I have to agree with so many of those points (even tho I made a small joke on Plurk).

Something that really makes me angry are those who use things like ping.fm to send the same thing out to a number of social media sites and then don’t check for responses.

They’re unfollowed fairly quickly as I find those messages invasive and spammy!

How are we able to have a conversation with people who aren’t there?

I did try ping.fm when it was new, and I didn’t mind it at the time BUT I only ever used it on four sites and I used it as a convenience, once posted I would go into each site in turn to catch up with other’s posts and responses to my own.

.-= Wendishness´s last blog ..Just another quiet night! =-.

  2. I totally agree about pin.fm Wendy! Social media is about interaction! occasional links are fine, but to send a message and not answer responses is just plain rude!

People who do it just treat others as a commodity!

  3. Hi Allen,

I love how Connie Reece put it – you’ve heard no shirt, no shoes, no service? On twitter it’s no bio, no photo, no follow.

Love your lists! One other thing will make me unfollow people.

Please, I don’t need 50,000 followers, and I’m definitely not going to learn how to get them from someone who has 3000 and is following 4000. I’ll stop now so I don’t get on a soapbox about that one.

  4. @Teeg No bio, no photo, no follow? Love it! Sounds like there’s another post there!

  5. Right on track! I wondered about people that follow everyone and don’t write anything.

I also wondered how people followed thousands of tweets – well I need to unfollow some people.

    Still new to social networking.

I see a lot of blogs on “How to Blog” but I still want to know how much time a business owner should dedicate to blogging while working a full schedule and taking care of self, family, and household.

  6. @swiftbusiness Roxanne social media seems to constantly change, so we’re all on a steep learning curve.

I’d recommend visiting Social Media Mom and SUcomments for help!

Have a great evening, and thanks for the visit! 🙂
